📬 Smishing: The SMS Scam You’re Probably Ignoring
Posted: July 30, 2025
Smishing is short for SMS phishing. It’s when scammers send fake text messages to trick you into clicking malicious links, downloading harmful apps, or giving away personal information like passwords or bank details.
🕵️♂️ How Smishing Works
- You get a fake text pretending to be from your bank, courier, or even your boss.
- It includes a fake link or a request for urgent action.
- Clicking the link steals your information or installs malware.
🚩 Red Flags
- Urgent or threatening language
- Spelling or grammar mistakes
- Suspicious-looking links (e.g., gtb-support.info)
- Requests for sensitive information like BVN or PIN
🛡️ How to Stay Safe
- Never click unknown links in SMS
- Visit official websites manually
- Enable two-factor authentication
- Use mobile security apps like Bitdefender, Norton, or Kaspersky
If you’ve already fallen for one, change your passwords, report to your bank, and run a malware scan on your phone.
